GC-MS (Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry) testing is the gold standard for verifying essential oil purity. Here's what independent labs found when they tested popular brands — including dōTERRA.
What is GC-MS Testing?
Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is a scientific method used to identify the exact chemical compounds present in a substance. For essential oils, it reveals whether a product contains only the natural plant compounds it claims, or whether it has been adulterated with synthetic fillers, extenders, or cheaper substitute compounds.
Many brands label their products as "100% pure" or "therapeutic grade" — but without third-party GC-MS verification, those claims are unverified marketing language. The reports below are from two independent organizations with no financial relationship with dōTERRA.

Essential oils are absorbed through the skin and inhaled directly into the lungs and bloodstream. When a product contains synthetic compounds instead of pure plant extracts, you're not getting the therapeutic benefit you paid for — and in some cases, you may be introducing synthetic chemicals into your body.
